Oppression Into Opportunity

Before I begin this week’s blog, I want to take a second to admire technology. Here I am, driving back up to Berkeley from San Diego (after spending a wonderful and much need thanksgiving break) writing my blog post. I’m connected to my phone’s hotspot and it couldn’t be simpler. I love it! The ease of it all is fascinating! My Mac is small and thin enough to fit comfortably in my friend’s small FRS. Technology is wonderful! If we could always use it for good we’d be able to accomplish so much as a people. Several movements do use it for positive agendas. The Half the Sky movement is one that does just so.

According to their website, this movement cuts across all platforms to spark change which is desperately needed to end the oppression of women and girls around the world. I find it saddening that women worldwide still face such oppression. I dream of place where we are all equal and all have the same opportunities. It pains me to know that we are still quite a ways from this utopia. This specific topic hits close to home, as I was raised by my mother and I know for a fact that she is one of the strongest people I know. She laid the foundation to who I am today and I am thankful for her every single day. However, she was lucky to have been raised by a loving family in a calm town in Switzerland. Not all are as lucky. Oppression, violence, and pain is experienced by women daily. The Half the Sky movement was inspired by journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book of the same name. They merge video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to raise awareness of women’s issues but also to provide tangible steps towards combatting these critical problems.
